6 Key Steps To Improve Your Positive Thinking Skills

Living and working with people who always have a negative attitude is one of the worst situations that you can be in. For some reason, these types of people just seem to see the worst in every situation. No matter what is going on in their life, they will find something to complain about.

But what if that person is you?

Perpetually stuck in a negative headspace, you could be stressing yourself to death. How do you change it though? Is there a way to turn your pessimistic brain into one that sees the positive side of the situation?

If you’re trying to change, but can’t figure it out, don’t worry you’re not alone. Becoming a more positive person takes a bit of internal work, but it can be dome. Here are 6 of the best steps to improve your positive thinking skills.

Hunt The Good Stuff

This is one of the hardest things that I had to learn, it takes practice, and if you don’t keep at it, you can easily lose the skill. Hunting the good stuff involves letting go of negative aspects of the situation and focusing on how you grew as a person or the positive elements. When you have something, really bad happen it can be hard to do this.

I got robbed about 4 years ago, two weeks before Christmas. I forgot to set the alarm and didn’t lock the deadbolt (yes I realize how bad that is, but we live in the country, and I felt safe.) Instead of dwelling on how unsafe I felt, or how much of a violation it was, I focused on learning how to be more secure in my home. I was so grateful no one was home at the time it happened, and I learned to secure my home and belongings at all times. Hunting the good stuff when you’ve been robbed, not easy, but it can be done.

Keep a Gratitude Journal

Fulfillment Daily recommends that you keep a journal of all the things you are grateful for. Journal daily so that you spend time each day understanding that you have positive things happening in your life, this will help you recognize the positive much faster.

Replace Have with Get

This is another tip from Fulfillment Daily. Replace the word have with the word get when speaking about your obligations. Instead of saying things like “I have to go to the grocery store.”

Instead of, “I have to go to work,” you can say, “I get to go to work and I get to go to the grocery store.” Putting it in this frame allows you to appreciate the positive things in mundane tasks. Not everyone gets to go to work or gets to go to the grocery store. It is something to be grateful for.

Replace Problems with Challenges

This is similar to swapping the word have with the word get. When you have a problem, it is usually something that is broken or something that is negative. Advanced Life Skills says this subconscious connection with the word problem creates negativity. The word challenge, however, does not have that negativity. Instead, it opens you up for opportunities to grow and learn.

Realize Your Control

Tiny Buddha wants to remind us that we control our reactions to the world around us. While we cannot control the things that happen, we can control what we do about it. We can choose to react negatively, or we can react in a positive way that will help with our overall goal of a more positive life.
